“Interdisciplinary Asia: Bridges to New Opportunities”

52nd Annual Mid-Atlantic Region Association for Asian Studies Conference

November 2nd-3rd, 2024

University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware

Interdisciplinary approaches have become increasingly prominent in all research fields as they create new knowledge by breaking boundaries and barriers and provide new lenses for critical inquiries. They have transformed the landscape of academia as we witness the emergence and popularization of interdisciplinary degrees and programs in the past few decades. As a research area, Asian Studies has been interdisciplinary and cross-border from the beginning. To what extent has interdisciplinarity defined and changed Asian Studies? The recent “Global Asia” initiative advocates not only for “Asia” beyond a particular region but also for ideas or frameworks in their plural forms. How does the synthesis of humanities, social, and natural sciences further expand our knowledge of Asia, which in turn informs us of inquiries into the epistemology of other geographical, cultural, and political categories? What are the challenges and opportunities brought by interdisciplinarity to Asian Studies in an era when crossing borders, physical or conceptual, has never been so controversial and yet needed?

We encourage proposals addressing but not limited to these questions and welcome participation from faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, independent scholars, and professionals. Please visit the MARAAS website (https://maraas.org/) to submit paper or panel proposals by May 30, 2024.
